Reading Challenges for 2024

“We read to know that we are not alone.”
William Nicholson

Reading may be an inherently solitary activity, but it is something we can do as part of a broader community. Perhaps that explains the popularity of reading challenges.

Or maybe they’re just a way to hold ourselves accountable or broaden our reading horizons. Be that as it may, as long as there are readers, there will be reading challenges!

Of the plethora of reading challenges available, I decided to participate in four. One of them is of course my own Book Bingo reading challenge. The other two are based on the number of books read, and the fourth is based on book recommendations.

The Book Bingo reading challenge

Yes Yes. I’m starting with the challenge I’m organizing myself, so shoot me! 😉

This is a simple, highly adaptable challenge to your reading tastes, which also encourages you to read something outside your comfort zone.

Although I set the clues myself, and usually have a pretty good idea of which books I’ll pick up for each of the clues, I rarely stick to that list and don’t always complete the challenge. Rebellious, I know!

I’ve already crossed out five of the prompts and am only two books away from a whole row of prompts. Look at me go! 😉

This year I want to complete the entire bingo card, so I am publicly committing to that. Hold me accountable, will you?

You can find the details of this challenge here – and maybe join in.

12 in 12 challenge

The premise of this challenge is super simple: get 12 friends to recommend one book each and read those 12 books throughout the year. I was introduced to this challenge by Ritu Bindra, host of the Bookish League blog hop at Bohemian Bibliophile.

I got my recommendations from blog hop members and came up with this 12 out of 12 list for 2024.

The Blogchatter TBR Challenge

This is my fourth year participating in the #TBRChallenge by Blogchatter. This is a simple challenge based on the number of books you want to read during the year. I’ve set my goal here at 30 books.

I’m pretty sure I’ll read thirty books this year; I often read more than thirty, but when I set myself number-based goals, I prefer to be on the safe side.

Why, you may ask? Because reading is a fun activity, and I don’t want to read just to reach an arbitrary number goal. I like to set goals that I think are achievable and that I can enjoy achieving.

The Goodreads Reading Challenge

This is another numbers-based challenge, and my goal here is also the same as with Blogchatter’s reading challenge.

As of this writing, I’ve already read eight books, and Goodreads tells me I’m five books ahead of schedule. Whenever I see this song I always get goosebumps!

The only difference between this challenge and Blogchatter’s challenge is the community aspect that Blogchatter builds so beautifully around everything they do. There are monthly #TBRChallenge activities and they have released the full calendar for the year.

For example, for February the assignment is to talk about your favorite literary couple in the form of a blog post, reel, or tweet thread. I have already noted my favorite literary couples; I’ll do a tweet thread about them soon!

I love that we have the option to participate on any platform of our choosing. That makes it a lot more fun and easier to participate.

So there you have it: these are all the reading challenges I’m participating in this year.
