MULLANGI KOSAMBARI
What I noticed in our nearby department store, next to fresh carrots, were bunches of white radishes. They looked so attractive that I had to buy some!
Radish called Mooli in Hindi, Mullangi in Kannada and Tamil is of course not new to us. I occasionally make dishes with radish, because this commonly available root vegetable is strong in antioxidants and therefore contains several health benefits.
Elsewhere in this blog you will find recipes for dishes made with radish, such as: –
Today’s recipe is for a simple, easy-to-make Mullangi Kosambari – which roughly translates to Radish Salad – from my home state of Karnataka. This is served as a side dish with the main meal.
Give this a try and I’m sure you’ll love it as much as we do!
Ingredients:-
- Radish, medium, 2
- Lemon, juice, of 1/2 lemon
- Green peppers, 2
- Curry leaves, 10
- Mustard seeds, 1/4 teaspoon
- Urad Dal, 1/2 tsp
- Coriander leaves, finely chopped, 1 tbsp
- Fresh shredded coconut, 1/4 cup
- Oil, 2 teaspoons
- Salt, to taste
Method:-
Discard the green part of the radish
Cut the green peppers
Wash, peel and grate the radish (to about 1 cup)
Place the grated radish in a bowl, add the lemon juice and salt. Mix well.
Heat the oil in a small pan and add the mustard seeds over medium heat. When they sputter, add urad dal and fry until the dal changes color
To this, add the chopped green chillies and curry leaves and fry for a few seconds
Turn off the gas and pour this seasoning onto the grated radish in the bowl. Mix well.
Finally, add fresh coconut graters and chopped coriander leaves and mix well.
