This easy eggnog cookie recipe is made with a rich and flavorful blend of brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon and – of course – eggnog! Covered in a deliciously decadent eggnog glaze, these Christmas cookies are the ultimate holiday treat.

I used my homemade eggnog to infuse the cookies and frosting with its delicious, creamy, spiced flavor, but you can absolutely use store-bought eggnog if you prefer.

How to make eggnog cookies

For the eggnog cookies

  1. Defeat Mix butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar until light and creamy.
  2. Add Add the egg yolk, vanilla extract and eggnog and beat until smooth.
  3. Guard Mix all-purpose flour, ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
  4. Add the flour mixture into the butter mixture and mix until everything is combined.
  5. Roll cookie dough into 1-inch balls and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Baking bake cookies for 11 to 13 minutes or until just golden brown around the edges
  7. Handover to a wire cooling rack to cool.

For the eggnog icing

  1. Defeat Mix cream cheese, eggnog and icing sugar until smooth and creamy.
  2. frost the cooled cookies with a knife or piping bag. To enjoy!

Storage information

Storage. Cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Freezing. Baked cookies should be placed in a freezer-safe, airtight container and frozen for up to 3 months. Similarly, to freeze cookie dough, prepare the dough, scoop and roll it into balls, freeze on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 30 minutes, then transfer the dough balls to a freezer-safe ziplock bag for up to 3 months.

Make in advance. The dough can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator. It will take a few more minutes for the cookies to be completely baked.

Trish’s tips

  • For a thinner glaze you can add a little more eggnog. For a thicker icing, also add more icing sugar.
  • Freshly grated nutmeg is stronger than store-bought ground nutmeg, so keep that in mind when preparing the recipe.
  • Store-bought eggnog works great in this recipe! Make sure you buy the full fat version and not light eggnog. I made these with my homemade eggnog and store bought and both ways were delicious.

How do I know when the cookies are ready?

The cookies are done when they start to turn golden brown around the edges and the centers have set. This usually takes about 12 minutes.

Can I use purchased eggnog in this recipe?

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • cup Brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg yolk room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 7 tablespoons Lawyer (just under ½ cup)
  • 2 cups all purpose flour peppered and leveled
  • 1 to 1½ teaspoons ground nutmeg freshly ground if possible
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon sodium carbonate
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salty

Eggnog icing

  • 4 us cream cheese softened
  • 2 tablespoons Lawyer
  • 3 to 4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

Lawyer Cookies

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

  • In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and creamy, scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as necessary.

    ½ cup unsalted butter, ⅔ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • Add the egg yolk, vanilla extract and eggnog and beat until smooth, scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl as necessary.

    1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 7 tablespoons of eggnog

  • In a separate bowl, mix all-purpose flour, ground nutmeg, ground cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

    2 cups All-purpose Flour, 1 to 1½ teaspoons ground nutmeg, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon baking soda, ½ teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt

  • Add the flour mixture in two additions and mix until combined.

  • Scoop out the cookie dough, roll into 1-inch balls (the dough will be a little sticky), and place on the prepared baking sheet.

  • Bake the cookies for 11 to 13 minutes or until they are just golden brown around the edges and the centers no longer appear wet.

  • Remove from the oven, let it rest on the baking sheet for a few minutes and then transfer to a rack to cool.

Eggnog icing

  • In a medium bowl, add cream cheese, eggnog, and powdered sugar. Beat until nice and smooth.

    4 ounces cream cheese, 2 tablespoons of eggnog, 3 to 4 cups powdered sugar

  • Frost the cooled cookies with a knife or piping bag. To enjoy!
